Lake Nkuruba Nature Reserve was established in 1991 with the goal of protecting all of the ancient forest habitats that surround the volcanic Crater Lake, which is one of the few crater lakes within the region's remaining lush forest habitat.

Kibale Forest National Park is open for chimpanzee tracking throughout the year. December, January, February, June, July, August, and September are the driest months of the year and the best times for chimpanzee trekking in Kibale Forest, when the hiking trails are dry and easier to navigate.
