Gorilla Trekking

Mount gorilla trekking in the dense African tropical rain forests is a magical encounter. The Uganda Wildlife Authority only allows eight tourists to track each gorilla group. This is done to minimize any possible transmission of human diseases to the gentle apes; tourists are requested to maintain a distance of 10m from the mountain gorillas. Typically, mountain trekking may take between 3 and 8 hours and requires some fitness level; however, everyone can see mountain gorillas with levels of fitness.

Golden Monkey Tracking

Golden monkeys are only a small number surviving in the world; the golden monkeys are only located along the foothills of the volcanic mountain areas, such as Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda and Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda. Golden monkeys are characterized by their bright golden body, cheeks, and tail, in contrast with their black limbs, crown, and tail end. Golden monkeys are playful primates that are a lot of pleasure to watch.

Climb a Volcano

Tourists staying at Virunga Lodge or Mount Gahinga Lodge can easily go to the Virunga chain of volcanoes, which offer hikers stunning panoramas. The three most popular Virunga volcanoes to hike are Mount Gahinga, Mount Sabyinyo, and Mount Muhavura. These hikes vary from difficult to easy; they range from 2 days to a full day. Hiking a volcano starts at 7:00am from Gahinga Gorilla National Park or Volcanoes National Park’s headquarters.

Hike the Kisozi Caldera

Kisozi Caldera is situated less than a kilometer from Mount Gahinga Lodge. The Kisozi Caldera is an easy to medium hike to the top of a small hill where the caldera deepens from corner to corner. Kisozi caldera is formed by volcanic eruptions, and many dot the stunning landscape of this volcanic region.

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is open for gorilla trekking throughout the year, but the best times are during the dry months of June to September and December to February, also known as the peak season. At these times, the trekking trails are easier to navigate.
