Nshongi Camp is situated in the perfect place to start your mountain gorilla trekking in the Rushaga sector of Bwindi; in fact, it's the only place where mountain gorilla habituation takes place in Uganda and where the five different mountain gorilla groups live. These mountain gorilla groups include the Nshongi gorilla family, the Mishaya gorilla family, the Kahungye gorilla family, the Busingye gorilla group, and the Bweza gorilla group. Nshongi Camp is eco-friendly, rustic in nature, warm, and locally owned. It is famous as the base for mountain gorilla trekking, Bwindi forest viewing and birding, nature walks, and more than 315 bird species, of which many are endemic. Nshongi Camp has just four traditional bandas, all in their perfect setting, connected to nature in a romantic style. Guests can easily dine under the stars as they relax by the roaring campfire. The Nshongi camp provides three meals per day.

Gorilla trekking in the Rushaga sector
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is famous for conserving almost half of the 1,000 mountain gorillas left in the world. Gorilla tracking is the biggest key attraction for most tourists to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Meeting the mountain gorillas for the first time in your life is a lifetime experience. Gorilla trekking permits must be secured prior due to limited availability.
Gorilla trekking involves hiking for many hours through Africa's dense jungles. Gorilla trekking takes about 2-6 hours of trekking deep into the forest to see the magnificent gentle apes in their natural habitat. Watching mountain gorillas interact, feed, and play with each other in close range is a truly unforgettable encounter.
Gorilla Habituation Experience in Rushaga
The gorilla habituation experience offers an incredible opportunity to spend four hours with a mountain gorilla family in the Rushaga sector with researchers, which is only available in Uganda. Witnessing a mountain gorilla family in their natural habitat is a unique African experience. Two family groups are currently habituated; gorilla habituation allows mountain gorillas to get used to being around people.
Hiking through the Forest
Hiking tours that take tourists through the impenetrable forest may be done in one day or more. They start in the north of Bwindi and end in the south at Nkuringo, where travelers can spend the night and continue the following day to the picturesque Lake Mutanda, where they can paddle over in a wooden dugout canoe and continue to Kisoro.
Nature Walks and Hiking Trails
Not all tourists to Bwindi go for gorilla trekking. Some participate in hiking, which enables visitors to experience Bwindi ecosystems, which include high-altitude hills, marshes, and waterfalls. Popular paths include the Rushura Hill Trail, which provides sweeping views of the forest, lakes, and even the far-off summits of the Virunga Mountains, and the Munyaga River Trail, which is great for seeing primates and forest birds.

Bwindi is home to over 350 bird species; 23 bird species are endemic to the Albertine Rift. The Batwa Forest Experience
The Batwa pygmies were the first inhabitants of the forest, having lived there for thousands of years. The Batwa people of southwest Uganda were hunters, honey collectors, and fruit gatherers. They left a small ecological footprint on the forest and lived in harmony with nature. You can visit the Batwa community and learn of their traditional ways of hunting and gathering.
When can I trek gorillas in the Rushaga sector?
The best time to go gorilla trekking is during the dry season because the mountain gorillas stay in a tropical rainforest, which can be muddy and slippery occasionally. The dry season falls between June and September, again by December and February. Trek mountain gorillas during the dry season to make the trip more daring and unforgettable.
