Gorilla trekking 

Gorilla trekking is a top-notch activity in Volcanoes National Park. The Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda is one of the four national parks offering mountain gorilla trekking in their natural environment. The remaining national parks include Virunga National Park in Congo, Mgahinga National Park, and Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in Uganda. Rwanda’s gorilla trekking permit costs $1500 per individual for an hour of viewing mountain gorillas.

Golden monkey trekking

Tracking golden monkeys is ranked second after mountain tracking gorillas. Observing golden monkeys eat, groom, and jump from one bamboo tree branch to the next requires a trekking permit of $100. Hiking Mount Karisimbi

Mount Karismbi is 4,507 meters high. A popular tourist site in Volcanoes National Park, Mount Karisimbi is a top-notch hiking experience. The sixth highest mountain in Africa, hiking it requires physical and mental preparedness to finish the two-day ascent. Before arriving at an elevation of 3700 m and then resting and having an overnight break, the hiking journey involves passing through lush forests. Early in the morning, hikers continued to ascend the last difficult section, arriving at the summit's peak. Upon reaching the summit, hikers are rewarded with breathtaking views of Mount Nyiragongo, the snow-capped Rwenzori Mountains, the Volcanoes National Park, and every volcano in the Virunga region.

Hiking Mount Bisoke

Mount Bisoke is located three hours away to drive from Kigali, Rwanda's capital. Compared to Karisimbi, Mount Bisoke is easier and can be finished in a single day. However, to succeed in the activity, hikers need to be reasonably physically fit. Mount Bisoke hiking permit costs $75.

Hiking Mount Muhabura

When visiting Volcanoes National Park, Mount Muhabura is an enthralling and exhilarating volcano to hike. Standing at 4,127 meters above sea level, this mountain is the third highest in the Virunga range. The trek begins around 1200 meters, and as hikers climb to the top, they will pass through gorgeous, lush forests and be able to glimpse the other volcanoes in the vast Virunga region.

Explore the Twin Lakes Ruhondo and Burera

After finishing a major activity like gorilla trekking or golden monkeys, a suggested way to relax is to visit the nearby Ruhondo and Burera Twin Lakes. Taking a boat ride across the deep waters of these two lakes will provide you with breathtaking views of the rolling landscape with its tumbling waterfalls.

Ngezi Nature Trail trek

The Ngezi Trek in Volcanoes National Park takes tourists to the Ngezi Crater Lake situated at the base of Mount Bisoke. The Ngezi nature trail trek requires about 4 hours and is guided by a Volcanoes National Park ranger. Along this beautiful walk, you have the chance to see various monkey species and birds.

You can go gorilla trekking in the Volcanoes National Park at any time of year, but it would be best to think about June to September. This is a long rainy season, so it is the best time of year for people who want to see gorillas, chimpanzees, and other forest activities.
