Gorilla trekking destinations are strenuous, so it requires all trekkers to be energetic enough to encounter this unique experience. When children under the age of 15 see large creatures, they can easily become terrified. In Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, the minimum age for gorilla trekking is 15 years old. Children below 15 years of age are unpredictable. They may yell when they see mountain gorillas, which may result in a variety of outcomes, including death if the gorilla fumes at them.

Mountain gorillas only live in the dense forest vegetation of Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and within the dormant volcanic Virunga chained-mountain range that stretches in Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park, Uganda’s Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, and in Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

There are two gorilla trekking hubs in Uganda, namely Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park alone protects half of the world’s mountain gorilla population.

Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park is famous as “The Place of Darkness” due to its dense forest treetops, which is an ancient, lowland forest and montane occupying over 128 square miles. The region was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of its incredible biodiversity and the huge number of endangered species that reside there.

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is known for 13 square miles of the larger Virunga habitat, which stretches within the 168 square miles into the border of Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Mgahinga Gorilla National Park protects three of the eight major Virunga peaks, such as Mount Gahinga, Mount Sabyinyo, and Mount Muhabura. 

Mountain gorilla trekking can be done all year around in Uganda; the best time to go gorilla trekking is in the months of June to September, December, January, and February. This is because there are no or less rains in these parks, which makes it easier to hike and see the mountain gorillas in their natural environment.
