A flourishing farming population on Bugarura Island has a traditional lifestyle and is almost always outside the island. Another island feature is Volcano Island, which was formed by a volcanic eruption. 

Sand beaches hug the shores of Lake Kivu, which makes it safe for swimming due to its pure water and lack of crocodiles or hippos.

 

About 28 different kinds of fish may be found in Lake Kivu, including the Lake Rukwa minnow, cichlids, sardines (also known as isambaza), tilapia, catfish, and barbel. The only lakes with freshwater crabs are Lake Tanganyika and Lake Kivu.

 

With an annual production of over 20,000 tons, it is Rwanda's largest local fish supply, helping to offset the cost of fish imports used as animal feed. In the DRC and Rwanda, 500,000 people rely on fishing.

 

Travelers are allowed to interact with the local fishing communities to learn about their customs, which include attracting fish with oil lights. You can also hear the soothing sound of ancestral ballads being sung at sunset as the fishermen prepare their evening catch.
