Ruhija sector is in the eastern section of Bwindi Impenetrable forest national park and co-exists alongside other sectors such as Nkuringo sector in the south, Rushaga sector in the south, and Buhoma sector in the north that harbor the habituated giant ape families in Bwindi Forest. Ruhija sector is characterized by low temperatures and cold weather that result from the dense, thick forest and hills of the Virunga ranges that dominate the park. Travelers that may wish to trek in the Ruhija sector may experience extreme coldness at night or in the morning hours, while during the daytime the temperatures are cool.

Ruhija region, like any other sector, has a uniqueness that draws a number of tourists who prefer to trek in this sector over other sectors in Bwindi Forest such as Nkringo, Buhoma, and Rushaga, where mountain gorilla families are habituated.

Ruhija sector is home to approximately three habituated mountain gorilla families that are open to the market all year round for mountain gorilla trekking experiences. Ruhija mountain gorilla families include the Bitukura mountain gorilla family, the Oruzogo mountain gorilla family, and the Nyaguriro mountain gorilla family.

The Uganda Wildlife Authority issues about 24 mountain gorilla trekking permits per day for the Ruhija sector, which is to say a maximum of 8 people are accepted per mountain gorilla family, just like in other sectors.
